Traineeships
Our traineeships offer a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in your chosen field, while also gaining insight into the impactful work we do at the EIB.
Eligibility to apply
If you are nearing graduation or have recently graduated, you may be eligible for one of our traineeships. To qualify, you should:
- be in your final year at university, or a graduate with less than one year of work experience (since your last degree, excluding internships/traineeships which are shorter than nine months).
- be an EU national.
- be proficient in English and/or French. Knowledge of additional EU languages will be an advantage.
Duration
Traineeships typically last between three to five months, with the option to extend to six months if requested by universities.
What we offer
- A flat-rate monthly allowance to help with living costs.
- Reimbursement for travel expenses (one round trip from your point of origin). Please note that accommodation arrangements are the responsibility of the trainee.

Graduate programme

Our Graduate Programme places you in a junior role within a specific business area, where you will apply your skills, actively contribute to your team, and take on new responsibilities as you grow.
Accounting and Reporting
We fund a multitude of projects in Europe and beyond, across industries and borders. It is therefore paramount that we are kept continuously, and accurately, informed of our financial position. If you have a background in accounting or reporting, you could access numerous career opportunities across the Bank, both in our corporate accounting functions and within individual business lines. You will have regular and ad-hoc reporting duties, and will monitor the latest developments in accounting directives and standards, with a central role in assessing their potential impact on our activities and in advising on their implementation at Bank and group level.
- Management: leading a team of experts, overseeing their work and driving strategy, you will ensure that our control and reporting functions are best-in-class. You will also promote the development of close relationship with the businesses.
- Financial control and reporting: you will ensure the accurate and timely production of our financial statements and other financial reports, in compliance with relevant EU directives and IFRS standards. You may also prepare our prudential reporting to the Central Bank of Luxembourg, and report on all EIB activities with an impact on the Bank’s financial position. Developing strong relationships both internally and externally you will play a key role in the optimal communication and the development of accounting related strategy.
- Management accounting, information, reporting: you will be the link between our operations and our decision makers at the highest level, working in partnership with functions across the organisation to provide the data that keeps our management informed on a timely and accurate basis. Your work will help shape decisions as you will develop appropriate KPIs to produce management information reports, suitable for use up to board level.
- Budgeting: you will contribute to the creation of financial and/or operational plans with input from the relevant business lines. These plans must be strategically viable at operational level at the outset, and your work will subsequently also cover reporting on progress and budget utilisation at regular intervals. Your role will extend beyond reporting as you will be expected to provide vital, independent decision-making information to senior management.
- Regulatory reporting: compliance with current directives and regulations is of the highest importance and you will keep up to date with developments in regulatory matters and their impact on all our areas of operation. You will also be responsible for maintaining our external relationships in this area so as to respond rapidly to queries and developments.
- Third party/mandate reporting: you work in this area is fundamental to the Bank’s credibility with external counterparts. You will work with external auditors (including the European Court of Auditors) and be responsible for preparing financial statements and other related internal and external financial reports, and establishing appropriate accounting policies and procedures, for third party funds under EIB management, or in the context of our SLA with the European Stability Mechanism.
Audit and internal control
Operating transversally across the Bank, you will have an unparallelled access to the full range of our activities, proactively mitigating risk in everything we do as you ensure our effectiveness and efficiency and oversee compliance with evolving best practice and international law and regulations.
Planning and conducting investigations and audit missions, deploying external consultants and improving our processes, procedures, methodologies, tools and systems, you can expect your role to challenge you in many different ways. In particular, you could enjoy regular exposure to senior management as your work shapes the way we think and work.
- Management: overseeing all the aspects of auditing and internal control under your remit, you will give your team the skills and support they need to succeed and make certain that they comply with corporate standards and best practice in all their activities.
- Internal audit: assessing the adequacy and effectiveness of our internal control systems and procedures, you will identify and recommend changes or upgrades as appropriate. As you lead and follow-up on audits, to make certain that identified corrective actions are implemented, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that we remain at the forefront of best practice.
- IT/systems audit: reviewing our computer systems from the standpoint of general controls, application controls and system security, and examining our IT infrastructure, governance, data management and communications, we look to you to make clear and considered recommendations to enhance our technology roadmap and ensure that our systems
afford maximum protection to our commercial activities. - Internal control: monitoring the appropriate implementation and maintenance of an effective and efficient Internal Control Framework across all Directorates, you will strengthen our lines of defence to actively mitigate identified risk exposures in all our activities, enabling the Bank to operation within the limits of its risk appetite.
Banking and Investment
As the EU bank and the world’s largest multilateral borrower and lender, our banking and investment activities are at the heart of everything we do. Naturally guided by financial criteria, our decisions also take into account the real-world impact of the projects we finance, specifically, how they will help improve the lives of the citizens of Europe.
Whether you come from the private sector, another IFI, or a financial services advisory firm, you will be familiar with most of our roles – if not our structure and job titles! Whether you work in a front, middle or back office function, you will have the opportunity to find a fulfilling banking role and you might even find that your skills could open up new career pathways for you, via our opportunities for internal mobility.
- Management: acting as leader for your team in a banking or investment activity, you will lead from the front at a strategic level and will ensure your people have the necessary skills and tools to succeed – and make Europe and beyond a better place for everyone.
- Front office – lending and investing: bringing our loan and investment decisions to life, you play a pivotal role, as you actively source, structure, negotiate and complete deals in your specialist sector and/or market, driving projects forward as you coordinate a team of colleagues from across the Bank.
- Front office – capital markets and treasury: raising or managing the funds that enable the Bank to finance its target projects, you will issue bonds to a stable and well diversified investor base or you will optimise liquidity management and provide financial engineering and expertise. Analysing and maintaining our asset-liability and collateral positions and implementing
appropriate hedging strategies, you will also contribute to protecting our balance sheet. - Investor relations: you will forge high-level relationships as the main point of contact with our external stakeholders and the investor community. You will command their full confidence with your up-to-date knowledge of our organisation and keep them apprised of the latest developments.
- Transaction management and restructuring: after the first disbursement of funds, we require constant and professional management of our loan and investment portfolios, and their associated client relationships. In this important function, you will monitor both projects and counterparts, responding to financial and contractual events, and/or implementing restructuring actions for distressed assets, as required. Your role will ultimately be to protect the EIB’s financial interests and reputation.
- Middle and back office: providing comprehensive support to our front office teams, at all stages of the funding or investment cycle, you will verify and monitor a wide array of
data and documentation, managing the Bank’s cash-flows, and ensuring the correct processing of all Borrowing, Loan and Treasury transactions. You will also play a part in ensuring integrity and contractual compliance and provide meaningful reporting to our management and to external parties or stakeholders. - Advisory: providing upstream financial advice on projects and thereby improving their access to finance, you will complement our lending and blending activities and enhance the impact of our financial products. You will also develop business cases for new financing mechanisms. In particular, you will ensure the Group makes available
its financial and technical expertise to project promoters and local authorities, strengthening project preparation and implementation, improving
efficient use of EU funds and enhancing the beneficiaries’/client’s institutional capacity.

Compliance
Our Compliance team comprises a group of experts from diverse professional backgrounds, such as investigatory, prosecution and forensic audit, with the mission to identify, assess, monitor and manage a broad spectrum of compliance issues relating to our activities, whilst ensuring we adhere to best practice and maintain the highest ethical standards. With your proven expertise in the field, we look to you not only to enhance our policies, procedures and practices, but also to transform behaviours, giving you considerable variety in your job.
- Management: proposing and implementing a strategy and overseeing all aspects of the outputs in your domain, you will give your teams the skills they need to maintain our reputation as a financial institution of exceptional probity
- Compliance: as you identify, assess, monitor, and advise and report on the Compliance risk of the EIB, you will provide strategic advice to senior management. Through the documentation and development of processes, the drafting of new regulatory texts and guidelines, the benchmarking of our performance and raising awareness of the need to maintain ethical standards, you will play a key role to minimise our financial, operational, reputational and political risks
- Investigation: leading or participating in investigations into alleged misconduct, and conducting far-reaching interviews, gaining an awareness of the broader picture whilst paying meticulous attention to the details, you will progress investigations to a positive outcome, drawing clear and considered conclusions that enable our management to take the appropriate steps and ensure that the breach does not recur
- Anti-Money Laundering (AML)/Know Your Client (KYC): ensuring that every euro we allocate goes to the right people and for the designated purpose, you will play a key role that protects our reputation as the bank of the European Union, and minimises the risk of our politically exposed position.
- Data protection: designing and implementing appropriate guidelines and practices for the governance of data, you will ensure that we comply with evolving rules and aim to keep us ahead of the regulatory curve.
Engineering
As a policy-driven institution, our aim is for all projects we finance to be both financially and technically sound, and to bring economic and social benefits. To achieve this and thereby maintain our commitment to improving Europe’s future and the people’s lives, we need colleagues with highly specialised, sector-specific knowledge, to support our in-depth assessment of potential projects.
In our Projects Directorate, your background in Engineering will place you at the centre of the technical assessment (and monitoring) of each project, and your opinions will help shape the Bank’s strategy in your sector.
Management: leading a team of highly expert staff, making recommendations based on their specialist knowledge, you will help us make decisions so we continue to deliver on our mission.
Engineering and Technical Assistance (TA): assessing and monitoring projects from a technical perspective, and advising both colleagues and external counterparts, you will also identify needs for technical assistance, prepare contract documentation and manage procurement processes. As a representative of the EIB, you will maintain contact with promoters, public authorities and EU institutions, and play an important advisory role in the provision of pre-financing technical assistance services for the development of projects.
IT
Information technology is central to the delivery of our transformative investments, placing our IT professionals at the heart of the organisation. We are committed to remaining at the forefront of innovation in our hardware, software, network infrastructure and communications systems, and we invest heavily in exciting emerging technology.
You can play a central role in defining and delivering our IT roadmap as you go the extra mile to maximise the user experience, minimise downtime, and find original solutions to challenging technology issues.

- Management: delivering IT solutions at a strategic level, you will forge close partnerships with senior management to realise our technology vision. At all times, you will ensure that your team members take the right decisions to improve user experiences, whilst keeping their own skills at the cutting edge.
- Business analysis: analysing our IT strategy, infrastructure, processes and systems, you will carefully examine the interface between business needs and technology provision. We will look to you to find innovative solutions to ongoing issues – harnessing the power of emerging technology to take our operations to the next level.
- Data analytics/governance/warehousing: examining the way we store, use and protect data, you will ensure that we enjoy constant access to the information we need to make informed business decisions.
- Project/change management: with a remit spanning processes, people, systems and structures, you will implement far-reaching programmes of activity that transform the way we operate. In particular, you will proactively solve ongoing business challenges, implementing IT solutions that keep us at the cutting edge of best practice.
- IT security: the sensitive nature of our work means that IT security is uppermost in our minds. You will ensure that our hardware, software and confidential data remain resilient to attack, with considerable autonomy to find innovative solutions.
- Systems applications and architecture: focusing on the interaction between our applications and their interface with users, you will aim to maximise performance and accessibility through targeted investment in new solutions. At all times, you will make certain that our systems are scalable, reliable, available and manageable, with a remit to deliver profound change.
- Technical support: providing comprehensive assistance to diverse users, you will focus on everything from training and induction to problem identification and resolution. This will demand deep understanding of users’ experiences and perspectives, a client focused approach, plus a meticulous approach to resolving issues.
Quantitative profiles
If you have a highly quantitative academic background, strong programming skills, in languages such as C++, C#, Python, or Matlab, and the ability to interpret highly complex (and often copious amounts of) data, we have a variety of roles for you. You will both challenge and be challenged, keeping your brain active and your ideas fresh, as you make your contribution to ensure that the Bank has the ability to understand its financial position, predict the future, meet its obligations, and continue its business of improving lives
- Management: overseeing activities in one of the domains below, you will keep the Bank at the forefront of best practice in your field and lead a team of highly technical specialists.
- ALM/Treasury: strengthening the Bank’s liquidity buffer, containing mark to market volatility, covering transfer pricing, performing projections, simulations, stress tests, and analyses, or maintaining and improving the EIB’s lending rate curve (the “Blue Curve”)
- Valuations: implementing, updating, validating and documenting interest rate, inflation, FX and equity-linked derivatives valuation models, as well as credit, debit and collateral valuation adjustment models
- Counterparty credit risk: implementing and controlling models for expected and potential future credit exposure and regulatory exposure measures
- Best Banking Practices implementation: developing complex reporting used for decision making by management, and working closely with IT counterparts to follow the development of new risk assessment methods
- Pricing: validating LG and other pricing-related computations, including FVA and related reporting. Computing the loan exposures to be covered with financial collateral
- Capital planning: developing and maintaining the Bank’s risk appetite, stress testing and capital planning frameworks. Leading and coordinating bank-wide stress test exercises
- Capital requirements: following the development and maintenance of credit risk pricing models (at both individual loan grading and portfolio levels)
- Model Development: developing and improving internal PD, LGD and EAD/CCF credit risk models, in accordance with internal standards and external best practice. Developing and implementing macro-economic stress testing and IFRS9 models. Challenging existing model assumptions, standards, framework and methods, and proposing changes
- Model maintenance: conducting reviews of all Bank models used for capital calculations, pricing, macro-economic stress testing, economic capital and IFRS9
- Model Validation: validating all models built to assess and quantify risks, as well as pricing, valuation, economic capital and stress-testing models. Also developing, documenting and maintaining a comprehensive set of validation methodologies
- Financial Engineering and Advisory: setting and quoting interest rates for both standard and special transactions, developing new products, providing quantitative modelling and advice
