The European Investment Bank (EIB) acts as a catalyst to better understand the challenges of investing in Europe’s economy and meet the financing needs of that investment.

The goal of the EIB Economics Department is to act as a hub for research into investment and investment finance across Europe. We bring together our own research and unique data sources with top-level research all over Europe, providing an entry point for researchers and a platform for dialogue.

We also play a critical role in supporting EIB operations through the analysis of the changing economic context, investment opportunities and risks, helping to define the Bank’s positioning, strategy and policy in Europe and beyond. We work to enhance the Bank’s ability to assess risks and track the impacts of its investments at both micro- and macroeconomic levels. With a core team of 40 economists, the EIB Economics department is divided into three divisions and led by Director Debora Revoltella.

  • Country and Financial Sector Analysis (CFSA) – Head of Division: Barbara Marchitto
  • Economic Studies (ES) – Head of Division: Laurent Maurin
  • Policy and Strategy (PS) – Head of Division: Emily Sinnott

Economists at Country and Financial Sector Analysis are regional experts who conduct and manage in-depth assessments, microeconomic and macroeconomic analysis, and round-table events in their own region of responsibility. They are ECON reference persons inside and outside the Bank for their region and area of responsibility. They also have coordination roles in special focus areas – e.g. sovereign ratings, financial sector rating, FVA, local currency lending and pricing, etc.

Economists at Economic Studies are experts on topics, who conduct and manage in-depth assessments in Bank priority areas, such as R&D, infrastructure finance, SMEs access to finance, employment, etc. They are ECON reference persons inside and outside the Bank for these topics, and support other economists and services when expertise is needed on a country or regional basis.

Economists at Policy and Strategy are experts in applying economic analysis to support internal strategy formulation and external policy dialogue. They also help place EIB intervention within the relevant European and international economic policy debates. They are ECON reference persons inside and outside the Bank in this area.

The EIB is the European Union's bank

We are the only bank owned by and representing the interests of the European Union Member States. We work closely with other EU institutions to implement EU policy. Our expertise is based on more than 60 years’ experience and the specialised knowledge of over 3,400 staff.

Our priorities

We support projects that make a significant contribution to growth and employment in Europe. As part of our counter-cyclical approach, our activities focus on four priority areas: innovation and skills, access to finance for smaller businesses, environment and climate, infrastructure.

We raise the bulk of our lending resources on the international capital markets through bond issues. Our excellent rating allows us to borrow at advantageous rates. We thus are able to offer good terms to our clients.

Why work for the EIB?

For many of us the greatest reward is to know that our contribution makes a positive impact on people’s lives, in the EU and beyond. By joining the EIB you will have the opportunity to make your contribution, whilst also developing your skillset and facing new professional challenges.

Based in Luxembourg, with a network of local and regional offices in Europe and across the world, we offer a pleasant and interesting work environment where people can achieve their professional goals, while maintaining work-life balance; with excellent professional development opportunities through training, internal mobility and merit-based career growth.

Diversity and Inclusion encompass everything that makes us who we are.
We believe that encouraging colleagues to be comfortable bringing their identities to work is essential to the success and development of the Bank, and reflects Europe itself.
