The Principal Data Software Engineer plays a critical role in the hands-on delivery and evolution of IDBS’s data platforms. Operating at principal level, the role focuses on building, operating, and continuously improving reliable, scalable, and compliant data capabilities that support AI, analytics, and enterprise workflows. Acting as a senior technical leader, the Principal Engineer influences data engineering decisions through deep practical expertise, balances near‑term delivery with long‑term maintainability, and ensures data platforms can sustainably support growing product, data, and regulatory demands.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Lead the hands-on delivery of reliable, scalable data pipelines and datasets that power AI discoverability, analytics, reporting, and workflow automation across scientific, clinical, and enterprise data.
  • Build, evolve, and operate data ingestion and processing capabilities for structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data, supporting the transition from early prototypes through early adoption and general release.
  • Implement and maintain rich metadata and data quality practices that enable cross-record querying, traceability, and AI-ready data access across experiments, files, inventory, and workflows.
  • Partner closely with architects, AI engineers, workflow engineers, and domain experts to ensure data is usable, performant, and trustworthy for downstream GenAI and analytics use cases.
  • Act as a technical leader by setting a high bar for data engineering practices, mentoring engineers through code and delivery, and unblocking complex data challenges within the team.
The essential requirements of the job include:
  • Significant hands-on experience building and operating production data pipelines that support analytics, AI/ML, and enterprise application use cases.
  • Strong practical experience working with unstructured and structured data, including ingestion, transformation, enrichment, indexing, and lifecycle management.
  • Proven ability to deliver high‑quality, production-grade data systems with a focus on data quality, reliability, scalability, observability, and operational support.
  • Experience enabling data for downstream AI and reporting use cases, including cross-entity queries, contextual linking, and performant data access patterns.
  • Demonstrated principal‑level impact through technical delivery, mentorship, and collaboration across teams, rather than through line management or pure architecture ownership.
Desirable (but not essential):
  • Experience supporting GenAI, NLP, or AI-driven discovery and reporting use cases through well-designed data pipelines and curated datasets.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based data platforms and tooling, including Databricks and AWS, in production enterprise environments.
  • Experience working with data in regulated or quality-sensitive domains (e.g. life sciences or GxP-aligned environments), including auditability and traceability considerations.

This position reports to the Senior Director of Digital Technology, and is part of the Digital Team located in Cambridge, UK and will be an onsite role.  

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Provide authoritative technical leadership over engineering work delivered by internal and 3rdparty development teams.
  • Ensure adherence to engineering standards, coding practices, architectural patterns, and security guidelines.
  • Conduct technical reviews, code inspections, and quality assurance checkpoints across key projects.
  • Act as the senior escalation point for critical technical issues, production incidents, and complex system failures.
  • Lead root cause analysis on complex technical faults and guide corrective and preventative actions.
The essential requirements of the job include:
  • BSc Degree in appropriate technical capability Computer Science, Information systems, or Engineering
  • Extensive hands-on experience (10+ years) in software engineering within modern digital environments.
  • Demonstrated expertise with cloud-native architectures, distributed systems, API design, and modern frameworks.
  • Deep understanding of DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and environment automation.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills for complex, large-scale systems.
  • Ability to influence external delivery partners and ensure compliance with standards.

The Principal Software Engineer (AI) will provide technical leadership in the design and delivery of production-grade, GenAI-enabled capabilities across IDBS platforms. The role focuses on applying large language models to real enterprise data: scientific, clinical, and operational to enable AI–driven discoverability, summarisation, reporting, and decision support.

Operating at principal level, you will be hands on, guiding teams through the transition from POC to early adoption and general release and help establish sustainable AI engineering practices across the department.

The engineer will collaborate closely with data scientists, bioinformaticians, and domain experts to deliver intelligent solutions for knowledge extraction, decision support, and workflow automation.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Lead the delivery of AI-enabled platform capabilities that accelerate insight and decision making across drug discovery, clinical development, and commercial operations.
  • Design and productionise scalable GenAI solutions using approaches such as retrieval augmented generation (RAG), MCP-style integrations, and selectively applied agentic patterns, balancing capability, cost, performance, and trust to deliver measurable value from proof‑of‑concept through early adoption and general release.
  • Translate scientific and business use cases into robust AI system designs that integrate cleanly with data platforms, workflows, and APIs.
  • Establish engineering best practices for GenAI/LLM applications, including system design patterns, evaluation approaches, reliability, scalability, and maintainability standards across the AI engineering lifecycle.
  • Act as a technical leader by mentoring engineers, influencing architectural direction, and driving the successful delivery and adoption of GenAI capabilities across IDBS platforms.
The essential requirements of the job include:
  • Designing, building, and operating LLM-powered capabilities such as document summarisation, retrieval augmented generation (RAG), and question answering over enterprise datasets.
  • Developing AI-ready data foundations, including unstructured data pipelines, metadata extraction and enrichment, and hybrid architectures using vector stores alongside relational databases.
  • Proven ability to deploy AI systems into production environments, with effective monitoring of model behaviour, data drift, cost, and latency, and the judgment to make pragmatic trade‑offs for reliability, scalability, and enterprise adoption.
  • Establishing robust operational practices, including versioning of prompts, models, and data, and implementing feature flags and controlled rollout strategies for AI capabilities.
  • Collaborating effectively with cross-functional partners (e.g., data science and domain experts), provide technical leadership, and mentor others while driving delivery in complex environments.
Desirable (but not essential):
  • Experience applying GenAI solutions in life sciences / biopharma contexts, including scientific, clinical, or regulated (GxP-aligned) environments.
  • Familiarity with building AI capabilities that support knowledge extraction, decision support, and workflow automation across enterprise data ecosystems, including cloud‑based platforms such as Databricks and AWS.
  • Experience defining or contributing to organisational best practices for AI engineering, including evaluation methods, governance, and scalable adoption approaches for generative/agentic AI.

The Sr. Staff Solution Architect – Commercial is responsible for designing and delivering end‑to‑end solutions that support the Commercial functions. This role partners closely with business and IT stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable, integrated architectures, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards and regulatory expectations.

This position reports to the Sr. Manager – Commercial Solution Architecture and is part of the Enterprise Engineering, Solution Architecture, Analysis & Design organization.

What you will do:
  • Translate business needs into technical solutions, ensuring seamless integration with global platforms and architectures.
  • Design secure, scalable, and maintainable solutions that adhere to enterprise architecture standards, align with global strategies, and integrate with global platforms, systems, and data environments.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to translate strategic objectives into technology roadmaps and solution blueprints.
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering, DevOps, Security, and Operations to ensure architectures are practical, buildable, testable, and operable, with clear handoffs into delivery.
  • Lead proof-of-concept initiatives and technology evaluations to validate architectural approaches and emerging technologies.
Who you are:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
  • Proficient in Salesforce (ServiceMax), with proven experience in leveraging its architecture to optimize field service workflows, asset management, and commercial operations
  • Multiple years of experience in enterprise software engineering delivery and/or in solution architecture for Commercial.
  • Deep functional domain and value‑stream architecture expertise, with the ability to abstract business complexity into scalable architectural patterns.
  • Strong ability to think end‑to‑end and long‑term, translating business strategy and value streams into coherent, sustainable architecture directions at domain or portfolio level.
  • Ability to communicate and influence effectively with senior business and IT stakeholders through pragmatic insight, clarity of thinking, and trust-based partnership.
Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements: 
  • Ability to travel up to 10%, including occasional overnight and international travel as required for team and stakeholder alignment.
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
  • Demonstrated success driving simplification and reuse across Commercial application portfolios while enabling scalable, global business growth.
